1935

Fairyland rode in grandeur on the South Pasadena float, “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” which took first place among cities of 20,000 population. The setting pictured Queen Titania standing within the cup of a huge flower, its petals made from thousands of carnations, shading from coral to pale pink, sweeping outward in graceful cures. Pink sweetpeas formed the queen’s transparent wings. |

Miss Margaret Louise Brown designed “Midsummer Nights Dream” in 1935, which boasted child-star Mickey Rooney as a rambunctious Puck. The float took home an award for the most beautiful entry in its class. The front of the float was assembled on the back of the truck supporting it, requiring fireman “Dutch” Phares to drive the entire five-mile route backwards, a feat he would accomplish though 1941, apparently the year he was finally allowed on the float design team. |
