1918 Float
Liberty Upholding the World
Liberty upholding the world, a broken helmet at her feet symbolizing crushed autocracy, was enthroned upon a float banked with red rose shields, backed by palm boughs and acacia and guarded by the Army and Navy. Mrs. Joseph Gutkowski impersonated Liberty. Seated upon a shield of red and white roses opposite were Katherine Smith as France, Mercedes Carpenter, Italy; Helen Hiles, Scotland; Marjorie Stuart, England. Two boys preceded the float with a satin banner, “South Pasadena”; flanking it were boy trumpeters. Mrs. J.W.Monahan designer.
